Restoring joinery without erasing it
A conversation with a Copenhagen carpenter about the line between repair and replacement.

Anders keeps a drawer of window sections going back to 1890. He opens it the way other people open photo albums.
The rule he works to is simple: replace the smallest possible piece. A rotted sill does not condemn a frame. A frame does not condemn a window. Most of what gets torn out of Copenhagen apartments each year had thirty good years left in it.
Restoration reads as expensive until you price it against replacing the same element twice in a lifetime.
